March 12, 2020

Dear HFCA Families,

The health and safety of Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy scholars and staff is our top priority. While information about Coronavirus (COVID-19) is changing daily, we will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as we know more.

We have no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our school and continue to take direction from the City of Milwaukee Health Department on any school closures. If there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 in our school, we will work with the Health Department to determine the best measures including potential school closure. I am writing now to communicate our Emergency Closure Plan.

The good news is that we have nine extra days built into our school calendar for emergency closure — much like we would use if there were too much snow or sub-zero temperatures. Should we need to close, we would spend down these days first. It is very important for students to come to school tomorrow, Friday, March 13, 2020, so that we can make sure that your child is prepared for a longer closure if necessary. On Friday, March 13, we will check to make sure that your child is able to log onto the platform from home and that they have the passwords they need to do so.

Below are three emergency scenarios and the learning plan that goes with each.

Plan A: If we need to close for 1 day or 4 consecutive days

If we need to close for one day here or there, these will be treated like normal school holidays. Students should plan to get caught up through PLT and office hours.

Plan B: If we need to close for 5 or more consecutive days up to 9 total days

Students will work from home so that learning can continue. Students will be expected to log into and complete assignments in ALEKS and NEWS-ELA. Students will be required to pass with a score of 80% to receive credit and completion of the assignment will count toward one of the content assessments or additionals.

Plan C: If we need to close for more than 9 days

We will go to you, our school community, to ask if you would prefer to borrow days from Spring Break (April 6 – April 13, 2020) or extend the school year. We will send an email to your contact information that we have on file. Please provide your contact information here if your address, email, or phone number have changed.

If we close school, you will be notified by email, text and robo-call. So please update your information in this survey directly so that  we can provide you with daily updates.

We will also post to social media (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) and we will post regular updates on our website. If you have questions, please email me directly at j.parker@fullercollegiate.org

Educationally yours,

Judith Parker, Principal
