Teacher Leaders Step Into Leadership Roles at MCA

Two long-time MCA teachers have moved into new leadership roles at MCA. Philip Smith will become a Dean of Teaching and Learning and LaQuasha Logan has been named Dean of Student Life.

“We are tremendously excited,” Principal Judith Parker said. “Both individuals have demonstrated not only great skill and passion for student learning in their classrooms, but also a commitment to Team MCA, it’s norms, and to furthering the development of the school, students, families and it’s team members.”

Mr. Philip Smith joined MCA in 2016 as a Social Studies teacher. During the 2017-18 school year, his role expanded when he was asked to join MCA’s Lead Teachers and, in that capacity, provided coaching and support to new teachers. This fall he will join Andrew Carek as a Dean of Teaching and Learning.

“After many years in the classroom, I am thrilled to be a part of the leadership team here at MCA,” says Smith. “We are in the business of closing opportunity gaps and I am responsible for developing the systems, programs, and relationships that will allow our scholars to show that with opportunities and equity, anything is possible.”

LaQuasha Logan joined MCA in 2015 as a 11th grade English teacher and 9th grade Advisor. The following year, Ms. Logan became the 12th Grade English teacher and a lead teacher sharing her passion for culturally relevant teaching and instituting a series of culture days that celebrated students. This year she will be MCA’s Dean of Student Life, a new leadership position.

“I have been an educator for six years. At MCA, I taught English for 3 years and work with students and staff to create a school culture that encompasses the MAC pillars: Character, Achievement and College,” Logan says.  “I love MCA because of the students, and I do what I do because of the mission. MCA is definitely what #BlackExcellence looks like, and I am excited to keep moving forward with the team!”
